Of Camel, Spider and Puppy ... winter 2016/17

Once again, the Algarve drew us south for the winter - irresistible beaches, sun and walking. This time, with the added dimension of having a telescope - one of Pete's 70(!) birthday presents.

The Réserve Ornithologique du Teich, Arcachon Bay in SW France and the Moinho da Mourisca, near Setubal in Portugal. Excellent birding sites to visit and provided great opportunities to try out the scope.

We reached the Algarve via Porto, Coimbra and Sintra. A fantastic trip and good weather.

Algarve
We booked into a campsite for a few days at Christmas and met up there with Maggie and Nigel and their dogs.

And of course a 'fat boys' breakfast!
and lots of coffee stops

The disused saltpans, sandbanks and mudflats around Ria de Alvor are brilliant for birdwatching - numerous waders and raptors - we spent a number of secluded nights here.

We never get tired of walking along deserted beaches...

and clifftops

Alvor harbour - spot the sunken yacht. Not sure what happened there.

Nice to see some new street art appearing in Lagos

This is Camel - our French motorhome neighbours take their poodle with them when going off to explore on their scooter. He has to have the bandana to stop his ears flapping around in the wind. (don't worry he's well strapped in and can't wait to hop aboard)

Pete cannot resist the Portuguese toast - it tastes even better in the sunshine

This has to be prime real estate for storks

From the Algarve we crossed into Spain to stay at El Rocio - described as Andalusia's Wild West. It looks like a film set from a spaghetti western. It has a history of pilgrimages, brotherhoods and wild horses.

Well worth a visit.

But the highlight of our return trip to France was a visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Absolutely fantastic.

Designed by Frank Gehry, it is a truly amazing building. We were lucky enough to see the reflective plates of titanium in bright sunshine - mind blowing.

one day we'll manage to take a decent selfie

Bilbao itself is a great city to explore

and lunch at Iruna is a must.
